Fourteen Falls lies on the Athi River near Thika, about an hour and a half north of Nairobi. The river drops around twenty seven metres across a broad rock face that splits the flow into a series of separate cascades, giving the falls their name, and the volume changes dramatically with the seasons. After the rains they are genuinely thunderous.
Local boat operators will take you out towards the base of the falls, and the surrounding area is good for walking, birdwatching and picnicking, with Ol Donyo Sabuk National Park rising directly behind. It makes an easy and inexpensive escape from the city for anyone who wants moving water and open country without a long drive. Entrance fees, transfers, mineral water and a guide are included.
